En 1991, après l’effondrement de son Etat, la Somalie basculait dans l’anarchie avec toutes les conséquences économiques qu’une telle situation implique pour une population déjà misérable. L’année suivante, devant l’impossibilité pour les organisations humanitaires d’assurer un ravitaillement en vivres avec un minimum de sécurité, les Nations Unies organisaient une première opération militaire. Encouragées par son succès, elles décidaient, en mars 1993, d’aller plus loin en désarmant les seigneurs de la guerre et en premier lieu le plus dangereux d’entre eux, Mohamed Farah Aïdid.

Roy Hollan’s machine-gun platoon was backing up a French Foreign Legion reconnaissance mission in a bombed-out neighborhood here a few days ago when his U.S. Marine unit spotted snipers on a rooftop. The Americans raised their weapons, girding for a firefight, until the French commander quickly informed them that the snipers were Legionnaires providing cover for the mission.

We are often faced with trying to test software that is closely coupled to some kind of framework. Examples include visual components (e.g. widgets, dialogs, etc.) and transactional component plug-ins. Testing these objects is hard because it can be expensive or impossible to construct all the objects that our system under test (SUT) needs to interact with. In other cases we have objects that are hard to test because they run asynchronously; examples include active objects (e.g. threads, processes, web servers, etc.) and user interfaces. Testing these objects is hard because the asynchronicity introduces uncertainty, interprocess coordination and the need for delays in tests. Faced with all these issues developers often just give up on testing this kind of code.
